Frequently Asked Questions
What is slate and what makes it suitable for tiling?
Slate is a natural metamorphic stone known for its density, durability, and distinctive layered texture. Because it's hard-wearing and naturally slip-resistant, it works well for both floors and walls.
Can slate tiles be used outdoors?
Yes, most slate is frost-resistant and suitable for patios, pathways, and exterior walls. We recommend confirming the specific tile's frost rating and using a suitable exterior-grade adhesive and grout.
Do slate tiles need to be sealed?
Yes. Slate is porous, so we recommend sealing before grouting and periodically afterward to protect against staining and moisture. A penetrating (impregnating) sealer is typical.
Why do the tiles vary in color and texture?
Slate is a natural product, so shade, veining, and surface texture vary from tile to tile and batch to batch. We recommend ordering all tiles for a project at once and dry-laying from several boxes to blend the variation.
How do I clean and maintain slate?
Sweep or vacuum regularly and clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner. Avoid acidic or abrasive products, which can damage the surface and break down the sealer.
Are slate tiles suitable for wet areas like bathrooms and showers?
Yes, when properly sealed. The natural texture also adds slip resistance, making it a popular choice for wet rooms.
How much area does one box cover?
Each box covers approximately 4.95 square feet. Measure the area you need to cover and add about 10% extra for cuts and waste.
Can I order a sample before buying?
Yes — for this product you can order a swatch sample before placing a full order.
