Maintenance Tips For Tile & Stone

Every tile is a little different — that’s part of what makes them special. At NESTTILE, we want to make sure your surfaces stay beautiful for years to come. So here are some simple, down-to-earth tips to help keep your tiles in great shape.

If you’re not sure what works best for your specific tile, just ask us — we’re happy to help.

A Good Rule of Thumb

Most of the time, a pH-neutral cleaner is the safest option. It’s gentle, effective, and works well on a wide range of surfaces.

On the flip side, acid-based cleaners can be risky — especially with natural stone. They might react with the material and change its appearance. So unless the product says it's safe for your tile, better to skip it.

Also: test any new cleaner on a small hidden spot first. Better safe than sorry.

If You Have Natural Stone…

Stone is beautiful, but it needs a little extra love.

  • You might notice some white powder (called efflorescence) showing up as the stone dries — totally normal. Just wipe it with clean water once everything’s fully dry.

  • If you see that happening in an older space, it could mean there’s a leak or moisture issue. It’s worth checking.

  • Sometimes, what looks like efflorescence is actually leftover sealer. If the stone looks cloudy or hazy, a sealer remover usually does the trick.

And just to repeat: no acid cleaners on stone. Ever. Stick with gentle, neutral pH products, sweep often, and mop occasionally.

For Basalt Tiles

Basalt is sturdy, but like any surface, it’ll build up grime over time.
Give it regular cleanings with a mild, soap-free cleaner. Rinse well and dry the surface to avoid streaks or slipperiness.

Glass Tiles

These are easy to keep clean — just use water or a pH-neutral glass cleaner, and wipe with a soft cloth.
Avoid vinegar or anything too acidic, since it can mess with the grout.

Metal Tiles & Mosaics

  • Wipe away smudges or fingerprints with a soft cloth — dry or damp both work.

  • For deeper cleaning, warm soapy water or a neutral cleaner is your friend.

  • If you want extra shine, a stainless-steel cleaner works well (just follow the instructions).

Avoid: Bleach, harsh scrubbing pads, steel wool — anything that can scratch or cause rust.
